The H factor vs the Dark Triad — two sides of the same coin?
HEXACO researchers showed that the three "dark traits" share a common core — and it is precisely low H: a pull towards manipulation, entitlement and greed. The H-factor test measures this axis from the bright side: sincerity, modesty, fairness to rules.
The Dark Triad (SD3) decomposes the same space into three distinct profiles: Machiavellianism (strategic manipulation), narcissism (a grandiose self) and psychopathy (impulsive coldness). It gives more detail about the style in which dark traits show up.
Practically: the H factor is the better single indicator of "can I trust this person with money and power" — while the SD3 better describes exactly how someone plays when they play dirty. Both are educational tests measuring traits in the general population, not diagnoses.
When to use: Honesty-Humility Test — the H factor (10 items)
- You want a single indicator of character integrity
- You are interested in the HEXACO model and the H factor
- You prefer positively framed questions
When to use: The Dark Triad of Personality (SD3)
- You want the breakdown into Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy
- You are analysing your (or someone's) power-game style
- You want profiles, not a single score
