Compatibility in a relationship — what really predicts it lasting (and what is a myth)

When people say "we are compatible", they usually mean shared interests and similar personalities. Couples research — from Gottman's lab to large longitudinal studies — tells a different story: compatibility is not similarity, it is how a couple handles differences.

The three pillars that predict lasting

1. Communication and post-conflict repair. Gottman became famous for predicting divorce with over 90% accuracy from watching couples discuss a conflict for a few minutes. The key warning signals: contempt, criticism of the person (rather than the behaviour), stonewalling and defensiveness. Lasting couples do not argue less — they repair better: they can break an escalation with a joke, an apology, a gesture.

2. Agreement on the big topics. Money, children, family, work, how much time together and apart. Small differences are healthy; value conflict in these areas is the most common fuel of so-called perpetual problems — which, per Gottman's research, make up 69% of couple conflicts. Lasting couples do not solve them all — they learn to live with them with humour instead of contempt.

3. Closeness and teamwork. Daily affection, shared laughter, rituals and responding to "bids for connection" — the small moments when a partner seeks attention. In Gottman's studies, couples that lasted responded to those bids ~86% of the time; those that split — ~33%.

What is a myth

Personality similarity predicts satisfaction weakly (what predicts it better is... low neuroticism and high agreeableness in both partners). Shared hobbies are nice but replaceable. "We never argue" is often a sign of avoidance, not harmony.
