Self-Esteem vs Self-Compassion β Which Test to Choose?
The Rosenberg Scale measures overall self-esteem β how highly you rate your worth as a person. High self-esteem means you generally think well of yourself. However, research shows that excessively high self-esteem can lead to narcissism and defensiveness.
Self-compassion (Kristin Neff) is the ability to treat yourself with kindness in the face of failures and difficulties. It encompasses three components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. Unlike self-esteem, it doesn't require comparing yourself to others.
Research suggests self-compassion is a healthier predictor of wellbeing than self-esteem, as it doesn't lead to narcissism and is more stable in the face of failure.
