DISC — discover your behavioral and personality style at work
The DISC model divides personalities into four styles: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness. Learn which style dominates in you and how it shapes your professional relationships.
Where does the DISC model come from?
The DISC model is based on William Marston's theory described in Emotions of Normal People (1928). Marston — a psychologist, lawyer, and creator of Wonder Woman — proposed that human behavior could be described by two dimensions: perception of the environment (favorable vs. unfavorable) and response to it (active vs. passive). Their intersection produced four styles.
Modern DISC tools are based on this theory, though Marston never created a test — his successors did.
The Four DISC Styles
D — Dominance Motivated by: results, challenges, control Style: direct, decisive, demanding, confident At work: natural leader, handles pressure and decisions well, may be perceived as authoritarian
I — Influence Motivated by: recognition, relationships, enthusiasm Style: sociable, persuasive, optimistic, creative At work: great networker and salesperson, inspires others, may struggle with deadlines
S — Steadiness Motivated by: stability, cooperation, sincerity Style: calm, loyal, patient, good listener At work: reliable team player, excellent mediator, may struggle with change
C — Conscientiousness Motivated by: quality, accuracy, expertise Style: analytical, systematic, cautious, detail-focused At work: master of quality and analysis, high standards, may be a perfectionist
How to read a DISC profile?
Most people have a mixed profile — a combination of two dominant styles. E.g., the DC style (Dominance-Conscientiousness) is typical of strategic leaders focused on results and quality. The IS style (Influence-Steadiness) — for warm, sociable relationship builders.
