Main character energy — what does it actually mean and how much do you have?

From TikTok to narrative psychology: where "main character energy" came from, when being the hero of your own life is healthy and when it gets tiring — and how to measure your MCE with a wink.

You walk through the city in headphones, slow motion, your personal soundtrack playing in the background. Congratulations: you are experiencing "main character energy". But what does this viral term actually describe — and does psychology have anything to say about it?

Where MCE came from

The concept took off on social media in the early 2020s, as an encouragement to stop being an extra in your own life: make decisions, celebrate the everyday, treat yourself as the hero of the story rather than the background for others. At its best, it is simply a sense of agency dressed in pop-culture language.

What psychology says

The interesting part: science has long studied something related — narrative identity. According to this line of research, people build their sense of "who I am" precisely through the story they tell about their own life, with plot lines, twists and character growth. People who narrate their lives as stories of agency and redemption (hardship leads to growth) report, on average, higher well-being. "Main character energy" is the meme version of that idea. It also has a darker edge: when being the main character starts to mean everyone else is an extra, it turns into self-centredness — and from there it is a short walk to exhausting everyone around you.
