Empathy test โ€” how deeply do you feel? 3 dimensions of empathy

Empathy is not one feeling. Discover 3 dimensions: cognitive, affective, and prosocial. Find out which dominates in you.

Empathy is not one feeling

Most people think of empathy as a single, simple feeling: "I feel what you feel". But psychology distinguishes at least three separate processes that together make up what we call empathy.

3 dimensions of empathy

1. Cognitive empathy

The ability to understand what another person feels and thinks โ€” without necessarily feeling the same. This is "reading" people: you understand their perspective, motivations and emotions. People with high cognitive empathy make excellent negotiators, therapists and leaders.

A curious fact: people with psychopathic traits often have high cognitive empathy (they understand what you feel) but low affective empathy (they don't care).

2. Affective empathy

Feeling with someone โ€” you literally feel another person's pain or joy as if it were your own. When you see someone crying, you feel sadness yourself. When someone is happy, their joy is contagious.

Very high affective empathy can lead to emotional burnout, especially in caring professions (doctors, nurses, psychologists).

3. Prosocial empathy

Empathy in action โ€” you don't just feel and understand, you also respond. You help, you listen, you get involved. This is the dimension that turns empathy into concrete prosocial behaviour.

Can empathy be developed?

Yes. Research shows that empathy training (e.g. compassion meditation, active listening, reading literary fiction) increases empathic abilities. Daniel Batson, one of the leading empathy researchers, showed that even briefly taking another person's perspective increases helping behaviour.
