Self-Compassion

What is self-compassion?

Self-compassion (Kristin Neff, 2003) is the ability to treat yourself with the same kindness you'd show a friend in difficulty. Three components: self-kindness (vs self-criticism), common humanity (vs isolation), and mindfulness (vs over-identification with emotions).

Why does it matter?

Self-compassion is a more stable predictor of well-being than self-esteem. It doesn't require constantly "being better" — it works even when you fail. Correlates with less anxiety, depression, and higher motivation.

How is it measured?

Self-Compassion Scale (Neff, 2003) — 26 items, or short form SCS-SF (12 items).
