What career is right for you? A science-based career test

Discover your ideal career paths with the Holland RIASEC test. Find out which professions best match your personality.

Why is choosing a career so difficult?

Choosing a career path is one of the most important decisions in life. Many people feel lost โ€” especially secondary-school leavers, university students and people thinking about changing careers. Traditional career counselling often relies on the counsellor's intuition rather than on data.

Fortunately, psychology has developed tools that help match personality to a work environment. The most popular of them is John Holland's RIASEC model.

Holland's theory โ€” 6 interest types

John Holland, an American psychologist, discovered in the 1950s that people and work environments can be described using 6 types:

R โ€” Realistic

You like physical work, tools and machines. You prefer concrete tasks. Careers: mechanic, engineer, farmer, electrician, surgeon.

I โ€” Investigative

You like to analyse, research and solve problems. You prefer intellectual work. Careers: scientist, programmer, analyst, doctor, chemist.

A โ€” Artistic

You like to create, express yourself and work with your imagination. You prefer an unstructured environment. Careers: graphic designer, musician, writer, architect, photographer.

S โ€” Social

You like to help people, teach and advise. You prefer working with people. Careers: teacher, psychologist, nurse, HR, coach.

E โ€” Enterprising

You like to persuade, lead and manage. You prefer risk and influence. Careers: manager, salesperson, lawyer, politician, entrepreneur.

C โ€” Conventional

You like order, systems and data. You prefer clear rules and procedures. Careers: accountant, administrator, data analyst, archivist, quality controller.

How to interpret your RIASEC profile

Your result isn't a single type but a profile โ€” usually described by your three highest letters (e.g. SAE, RIC). The more closely your profile matches the demands of a job, the more likely you are to find satisfaction in it.

Holland's theory has been confirmed in thousands of studies across different countries and cultures. Among others, the U.S. Department of Labor uses it (O*NET).
