Neuroticism

What is neuroticism?

Neuroticism is a personality dimension describing the tendency to experience negative emotions: anxiety, anger, sadness, guilt and shame. People high in neuroticism react more strongly to stress. In the Big Five model it is one of five core dimensions.

Why does it matter?

Neuroticism is one of the strongest predictors of anxiety and depressive disorders. High levels are associated with poorer sleep quality and higher burnout risk.

How is neuroticism measured?

Using personality questionnaires such as the NEO-PI-R, Big Five Inventory (BFI) or the brief TIPI scale.
